About This Item
P. F. Collier & Son, 1939-01-01. Hardcover. Very Good+/No Jacket - as issued. Complete 6 Volume Hardcover Set (all bindings match), Various dates from 1935 to 1942 P.F. Collier & Son - Volumes are: Of Mice and Men - 186 pages (1937), The Grapes of Wrath - 619 pages (1939), In Dubious Battle - 343 pages (1936); Tortilla Flat - 317 pages (1935) and illustrated by Ruth Gannett; The Moon Is Down - 188 pages (1942) and The Long Valley, which is all Short stories - 303 pages (1938). First published in 1938, this volume of stories collected with the encouragement of his longtime editor Pascal Covici serves as a wonderful introduction to the work of Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck. Set in the beautiful Salinas Valley of California, where simple people farm the land and struggle to find a place for themselves in the world, these stories reflect Steinbeckâs characteristic interests: the tensions between town and country, laborers and owners, past and present. Included here are the O. Henry Prize-winning story The Murder; The Chrysanthemums, perhaps Steinbeckâs most challenging story, both personally and artistically; Flight, The Snake, The White Quail, and the classic tales of The Red Pony. All volumes are Very Good+ with just a touch of shelf/edge wear - corners sharp. No previous owner markings - all pages are clean and unmarked. Clean endpapers. All bindings are red and blue stamped brown cloth boards with maroon labels and gilt titles on spine. The brown cloth boards show a homestead in blue and John Steinbeck in red on the front. This is a very, very handsome 6 Volume set that displays well in any room and unlike paperbacks, will last for many years to come. LOC
