John French Sloan (1871 – 1951) was an American painter and etcher. He is considered to be one of the founders of the Ashcan school of American art. He was also a member of the group known as The Eight. He is best known for his urban genre scenes and ability to capture the essence of neighborhood life in New York City, often observed through his Chelsea studio window. Sloan has been called the premier artist of the Ashcan School, and also a realist painter who embraced the principles of Socialism, though he himself disassociated his art from his politics.

A student of Robert Henri, Sloan worked as an illustrator for the Philadelphia press before moving to Greenwich Village. Published in conjunction an exhibition that ran September 18 through October 31, 1971 at the National Gallery of Art and then traveled to five other locations. Features text by David W. Scott, and E. John Bullard. Includes some color and numerous black and white illustrations, list of books illustrated by Sloan, selected bibliography, and index. A near fine copy and with the small rubber stamp of author, curator, and one time director of The Art Institute of Chicago Douglas Druick to the second endpaper. A nice copy with an interesting provenance.
