John Slater, Patent Steam Kitchen Manufacturer.

by Trade catalogue - [Steam ovens-Gastronomy]

  • Used
Early illustrated trade catalogue of steam ovens.

Mounted on front pastedown an engraved patent label with 2 illustrations of the stove, 20 numbered engraved leaves, of which 8 double-page, showing kitchen ranges, including portable models, necessary pots, utensils and internal fittings. 10 Plates with explanatory handbills, mounted on verso facing the plate, one text mounted on verso of front free endpaper. With small contemp. manuscript annotations in a fine readable hand. EXTRA: 7 Printed slips bound in with contemp. manuscript prices in ink. Compared to the few other historically sold copies in auction, our copy has the most plates and has extra printed slips.

Rare & early engraved trade catalogue for the newly patented steam ovens by the Birmingham manufacturer John Slater (unknown-1847), 'Coach spring maker' and 'Patent steam kitchen manufacturer'. The new patent of his machine was mentioned in 'The Gentleman's Magazine' of Dec. 1811 and the machine was extensively explained by his London agent in Jan. 1812.

The virtues of steam as a cooking medium were advertised for kitchen ranges in the late 18th- early 19th Century, stressing their fuel economy and preservation of food's flavours and goodness as central benefits. It also saved cooking utensils, since pots only needed rinsing with water after use, and preparing meals was faster. However these steam kitchen ranges were quite expensive and initially used in large high-volume, low-cost kitchens like workhouses and hospitals. They were cast iron stoves, including a roasting oven, that heated water to create steam that was then carried by internal pipes to reservoirs with custom-built rectangular pots.

Some signs of wear, first blank fly-leaf, outer blank margin of 1 plate restored, small patch of Japanese paper to strengthen plate mark corner on verso of last plate, occasionally slightly browned, occ. sl. offset, but - A good copy of a rare item. - cf: Sara Pennell, The Birth of the English Kitchen, 1600-1850. pp. 66-67.

[AMERICANA - 19th CENTURY EPHEMERA] AMERICAN COW MILKER MACHINE POSTER, ORIGINAL. Buffalo, NY: Express Printing Company for the American Cow Milking Machine Co. [n.d. ca. 1865]. 42 x 26 3/4 inches. Woodblock printing: Boldest typeface measures 10 inches tall. L. O. Colvin's "American Cow Milker" was patented in 1860 as the first use of teat cups with a vacuum. The milker was used in England, but the constant vacuum pressure caused problems with the cows' teats. He sold the patent in England for about $5,000, after selling over 1,500 machines. He continued to make improvements and was more successful in America where this undated broadside was published. "Triumphant Success | The Most Important and Valuable Invention of the 19th Century" proclaims the headline; the company is seeking business men to invest/sell the machines; the farmer is being courted. "A sure cure for aching hands & kicking cows." Several archival tape repairs to reverse with no loss of text. Heavy newsprint stock, printed in black.… Read More

Manuscript leaves numbered 38 through 255, plus 2 leaves of introduction. Folio (12 1/2" x 8 1/2") bound in later quarter calf over green marbled boards. The first page is captioned "Títulos y sucesiones de la casa llamada de Santa Inés, situada a la entrada de la ciudad de Tlalpan," or "Title deeds and inheritances of the house named after Santa Inés, situated at the entrance of the city of Tlalpan." The volume contains numerous documents which trace the succession of owners, sellers, and heirs of a house and orchard in San Agustín de las Cuevas, a town in colonial Coyoacán. It later came under the jurisdiction of Tlalpan in the national period, where it remains today. An introduction summarizes its contents; followed by a bill of the sale of the house by the bachiller Fr. Ventura de Medina y Picaso to Diego Bravo de Monera in 1688. Medina had dubbed the house Casa Santa Inés, a name that stuck. After several other buyers and heirs, the volume ends with a deed from 1839. The documents… Read More

"Pulcinoelefante" is an Italian publishing house founded by Alberto Casiraghi (or Casiraghy).
The books are hand printed using movable types on the high-quality Hahnemühle paper produced in Germany. Annually "Pulcinoelefante" publishes hundreds of small plaquettes formed by a text (aphorism or short poem), accompanied by small engravings or original drawings made by artists. Each edition is published in a very small number of copies hors de commerce.
Read More

Paris, 1953. One and one half page pen and ink letter (26.5 x 21.5 cm.) on single sheet of pale blue Paul Cushing Child stationery, with ink date stamp ("May 18 1953"), addressed, "USIS. 5 Place de Rome, Marseille (B du Rh)". ~ An early letter from Julia Child, written while she was living in Paris with her husband Paul and working on her first book, the seminal Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Child writes to a Mrs. Fairbanks: "What a nice hour we spent with you the other afternoon. I only wish it could be repeated, as I would love to hear more about Thomas Wolfe and all you know about him. It would also be fascinating for me to hear much much more about your culinary experiences. Mrs. de Santillana [Child's editor] says you are the best cooks she knows, and I can well believe it from the interest you take. It is indeed a fascinating subject and a beau métier. Had a nice talk about friture de cheval pour les frites [possibly french fries cooked in horse fat] with your chauffeur on the way home… Read More

Oppenheim: Par Iean Theodore dé Bry marchant libraire & bourgeois d'Oppenheim qui est sur le Rhin, 1619. Small quarto (19.5 x 14 cm.), [7], 8-72 pages, five plates engraved on copper, one folding. ~ FIRST FRENCH LANGUAGE EDITION and FIRST SEPARATE EDITION. The first book on individual heating using stoves. A rare work on improvements in fireplaces and stoves, featuring five plates of ornate examples. It was published by the copper engraver and publisher Jean Theodore de Bry (1561-1623), born in Strasbourg, who settled in Oppenheim in 1609. The text was published by the same publisher the previous year in German as part of a larger work by the author and titled Holzsparkunst. Franz Keslar or Kessler (circa 1580 - circa 1630) a painter from Frankfurt, describes several models of heating previously unrecorded in France. Keslar's innovation was a response to the dwindling supply of wood for heating and cooking throughout the Continent, promoting a transition from the use of hearths to the more efficient… Read More
