John Hopton adult life spanned the years 1432 1478. He was a Suffolk country gentlemen, who, did not appear to have the excesses of the upper-class of the period – robust self-esteem, brutal ambition and extraordinary competitiveness, but, conversely his virtues were all so unexceptional. In this book the author has attempted to place John Hopton in the framework of the world that he knew. Opening with the landless Yorkshireman acquisitions of properties in Suffolk, discussion of the properties themselves – how they were managed and their yield, and, of his family and their domestic world, and, finally the larger world in which he lived.  Softening of the back strip edges with rubbing of the book corners. Age toning of the text block edges and of the pages with scattered foxing to the top textblock edge. Previous owner's name to the top edge of the front paste-down. This previous owner has made numerous notes in the margins and underlined a large portion of the text. Creasing to the dustwrapper corners and back strip edges with sunning of the back strip. Rubbing of the fold over creases and staining to the panels.
