About This Item

Ephemera. Good + overall. A 1911 signed letter from John Burroughs, the American poet, essayist & naturalist (1837 - 1921), friend of Walt Whitman and Henry David Thoreau, to "Johnson". The letter reads, "Yours rec'd. I am rewriting parts of my new essays & trying to cut them down. When I get them in shape to suit me I will send them along. "Horse Sense" has gone elsewhere. Hope this day finds you well & thankful. Yours as always, John Burroughs". "Horse Sense" appeared in Volume 71 of The Independent, and debunked the story of a clever horse named Hans: "Here was a horse that had set all Germany agog by its supposed astonishing feats of intelligence, and stirred up bitter strife and debate among many prominent scientific men..." (p1198). Written at West Park NY. 5 1/2 x 9". With short closed tear at top edge.
