About This Item
Cleveland, Ohio: The Arthur Westbrook Company, 1908. 256 pages. The second in a series of mystery novels featuring a detective named Joe Phenix (sometimes mistakenly listed on the cover as Joe Phoenix). It was first published in 1884 by Beadle and Adams--scarce in any edition! Although Arthur Westbrook reprinted this book over a number of years, the rear cover provides a significant clue that this is the original 1908 printing. The first two Sherlock Holmes books listed actually were the same book (A Study in Scarlet). When the error was noticed, Westbrook published another book as the second on the list, and the list on all subsequent printings of Joe Phenix--Private Detective reflected that change. The book is in very good condition for a pulp paperback from that era: clean and tight, minimal edgewear at spine extremities; one tiny chip at top edge of rear cover; pages tanned but still reasonably supple.. First Edition Thus. Paperback. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Book.
