"James Butler - grandfather of the poet and professor Guy Butler - arrived in the Eastern Cape in 1876 as a sickly twenty-two-year old Londoner recuperating from a serious illness. He stayed for two and a half years, during a time of impending frontier war. In a journal he kept for his family back home, 'Jim' Butler, Quaker, teetotaller and later newspaper editor, recorded in down-to-earth fashion the daily life, politics, natural history and social encounters of this far-off corner of the colonies. 'Jim's Journal' has been re-edited and voluminously annotated for publication by Jane Garner." .
