Relief pitchers (Baseball) ¶ "Casimir James "Jim" Konstanty (1917-1976) was an American professional baseball player. He was a right-handed pitcher who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for several teams, most notably the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Yankees.
Konstanty had a successful career in baseball, but his most notable season was in 1950 with the Philadelphia Phillies. That year, he won the National League Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, a rare achievement for a relief pitcher. He was a key player in the Phillies' "Whiz Kids" team that won the National League pennant that year. During the 1950 season, Konstanty appeared in 74 games (all in relief), won 16 games, saved 22 games (a major league record at the time), and had a 2.66 earned run average (ERA). His performance was instrumental in the Phillies' success that year. After his time with the Phillies, Konstanty played for the New York Yankees, where he was part of the team that won the World Series in 1952. He retired from professional baseball in 1956. After his baseball career, Konstanty owned and operated a sporting goods store in Oneonta, New York. He passed away in 1976. His contributions to the sport, particularly his standout 1950 season, have ensured his place in baseball history."
