About This Item
Hoboken: KTAV, 1998. Hardcover with dustjacket, 24 cm, 305 pp. Ills.: black and white illustrations. Forty-five writers give their personal accounts of visits to little-known Jewish communities in such far-off places as India, Spain, Portugal, Mexico, Brazil, Cape Verde, Ethiopia, China, Peru, Uganda, and Ghana. For example, about 5,000 to 10,000 members of the Shinlung tribe in India are involved in practicing Judaism. There are about 250 Jews in Belmonte, Portugal, where the Jewish movement is strong. The Venhaver community in Brazil observes distinct traditions that are Jewish in origin. A group of Inca Indians in Peru are committed to Judaism. All the communities practice Judaism in some form, though some may not strictly follow Jewish law in every respect. Some of the groups have Jewish roots; others do not. Most are seeking further education and formal conversion to the faith. Primack has compiled a unique book that will be of interest to Jews and non-Jews alike. So said by George Cohen. Cond.: goed / good. ISBN: 0881256080. .
