About This Item

Decorative western theme matt paper hardbound boards with black cloth binding. The boards have smudges to both front and rear boards, edge wear along all sides but primarily to the front cover. Corners all have wear and bumping. The top and bottom of the spine back strip has fraying and the strip has white discoloration. The spine and hinges are firmly attached, with no cracking to the decorative pony express map on the endpapers. There is some "play" in the front board where the cloth gutter has loss some firmness. Text block is firmly attached with all pages intact. Very slight age tanning throughout. Beautiful in text and full-page color illustrations as well as black and white drawings. Interior pages are in very good condition with no tears, chips, cracks, or previous owner marks. Unpaginated but approximately 54 pages.

Thomas Sanford Tousey (1883 – 1961) while he studied art at some of the most prestigious art schools (Art Institute of Chicago, studied under Howard Pyle, at the Art Students League in New York and then finished art school in Paris) his career began two years before graduating from high school with drawing daily chalk-plate cartoons for the Anderson Morning Herald. After returning from Paris, he established a twenty-year career in New York as a freelance illustrator and cartoonist. During the 1930's Tousey began a new artist path - writing and illustrating children's books, becoming one of the bestselling children's book authors of his day . Over forty titles followed his first book in 1932, most involving cowboys, Indians, horses, the Old West, and a series of biographies of famed westerners.
