New York: Harry N. Abrams Inc., Publishers 1957, 1957. First edition, volume one. Small folio, pp. xliii, [1] blank, 122. Original black cloth, spine lettered in yellow, yellow design printed to upper board, yellow endpapers. Original glassine dust-jacket, printed in white, with publisher's insignia in white to rear panel. Top edge of front panel of dust-jacket missing, top edge of rear panel and bottom edge of front panel torn. A fine copy in a good dust-jacket. 105 pages of reproductions of Arp's work mainly in black and white, with some in colour. Volume one of the catalogue raisonné of the artist's work. Very good Arp joined the Blaue Reiter group of Expressionist artists in 1912, where he became acquainted with Wassily Kandinsky and Robert Delauney. In 1915, he co-founded the revolutionary Dadaist movement with Tristan Tzara and Hans Richter. Arp's second wife Marguerite Hagenbach, a former collector of his work, provides the introduction to this collection. Max Ernst described Arp's artistic technique as a "hypnotic language which takes us back to a lost paradise, to cosmic secrets, and teaches us to understand the language spoken by the universe."

Simon Finch has been a Rare Book Dealer since 1980. He has had shops in Notting Hill Gate, Mayfair and Holt, Norfolk. His firm has handled a wide variety of material from the First Folio of Shakespeare to the wilder shores of the counterculture and everything in between.
