Paris: Philippe-Denys Pierres, 1782. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good+. Hardcover 1st, a very nice copy in contemporary leather. Mottled leather with triple-rule border, dentelles, marbled endpapers, edges gilted over red stain, giving a coppery effect. All text pages are bright, straight and clean. The gilted edges are a bit dulled, as is the gilt-stamped spine. Corners bumped and worn; there is a gilt rule on the very edge of the boards, and it is rubbed or broken in numerous places. Overall vg+ despite the wear on the binding. Engraved frontis and title vignette; different from the vignette in the Valade-Cazin edition published later the same year. A poem outlining the author's philosophy of outdoor design, this book was terribly popular and went through many printings and translations very quickly. It was a major influence on British garden design which can still be detected today. 143 pp. French text.

Hirmer Publishers, 2015. 1st. 9 Paperbacks in Solander case. Fine. Fine. 9 books in Solander case. Only leafed through once. Books like new, some smudges on the outside of the Solander box, Ships from Hawaii. Weight For gardeners, Ireland's Roaring Water Bay, in West Cork, is a paradise: buoyed by the Gulf Stream and long hours of sunshine, its micro-climate permits unique plants―even palm trees―to grow and thrive there. And the past twenty years have seen the slow creation of a true masterpiece of "wild gardening" in the area: Glenkeen Garden, designed by Ulrike Crespo and Michael Satke. This book brings five photographers together to document the growth and development of the garden, each bringing to the project his own personal viewpoint. The result, a stunning and limited edition boxed set featuring several fold-outs, will enchant garden lovers with its images of luxuriant vegetation, innovative landscape architecture―including copses, avenues, and ponds―and inviting bridges and garden… Read More

LondonA. Dulau apparently contemporary full calf binding, front board and endpaper detached, spine in five panels gilt-decorated in French style, corners bumped, wear to leather panels, illustrated by frontispiece and four portraits of French Royals, all much foxed around edges, small piece (previous owner's name, presumably), clipped from top edge of title page, text block otherwise sound and clean in this large-paper production with generous margins. The author (1738 - 1813) was at one time considered the French Virgil, and was much praised by Voltaire, but his poetic reputation fell considerably in later times. He composed this work during the reign of Robespierre, and completed it while abroad in exile. It was published in France after his return in 1802 as 'La Piti', but according to the notes in this edition, had been severely tampered with by the censors of the Consulate. De Lille sold the manuscript to the present editors, who published this first complete edition in London, with… Read More

Chatwin Books, 2021. First Edition. Trade Paperback. New. New! 'I know from my own experience that an evening spent tending my garden, after another incomprehensible day, brings a strength and calmness that no other activity can match. Is it the qualities associated with gardening, such as nurturing and the hard work of hands and heart, that are deficient in our culture? Much good writing has been done about the garden as a special place.' Madeleine Wilde's woodland garden on the south slope of Seattle's Queen Anne Hill was more than a "special place." It was her Sanctuary, her prism through which she explored the world and accomplished "much good writing." For two decades, starting in the early 1990s, Madeleine's "Notes from the Garden" delighted readers of the Queen Anne & Magnolia News in Seattle. Here, in luminous prose, is the best of her work from those years, ranging from hands-on advice for gardeners and would-be gardeners to poetically charged, often wry, insights into life in the tradition… Read More

"Honest and reliable service - every book hand-packaged with care."
The Sakuteiki, or "Records of Garden Making," was written nearly 1000 years ago, making it the oldest work on Japanese gardening; in fact, the oldest book on gardening in the world! In this edition of the Sakuteiki, the authors provide both an English-language translation of this classic work; and an introduction to the cultural and historical context that led to the development of Japanese gardening. A Japanese court noble wrote the Sakuteiki during the Heian period (794-1184). During this critical era in Japanese history cultural influences on poetry, clothing-and gardening-that had been imported from China and Korea over the previous centuries were reexamined and reinterpreted into their unique Japanese forms. The Sakuteiki contains the first systematic record of this new… Read More
