About This Item
Paris: Chez Les Marchands de Nouveautes, 1798/VI. First edition. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 7" by 4". None. C F Mercier's translation of L Tansillo's famous work. With a charming frontispiece of the grape harvest of Nole in 1550. A male grape picker is surrounded by three women. Signed by Mercier. Prior to this translation of Tansillo's work there was a translation by Grainville. This is the first edition of Claude-Francois-Xavier Mercier. It is an authorised first edition by this text due to Mercier's signature on the edition page/ the verso of the title page. This work is in the French of Mercier. Published to the title page in the year VI of the French republic calendar or the French Revolutionary Calendar. The Gregorian publication year of this work is 1798. The Vendangeur is Luigi Tansillo's most famous work. Upon its publication in 1534 the work was condemned by Rome due to its portrayal of licentious women. The poem recalls a period of drinking and debauchery traditional during the time of the grape harvest. Luigi Tansillo was a poet of the Renaissance era from the province of Potenza in Basillicata. The translator, Claude-Francois-Xavier Mercier was a French writer and editor known for his satirical and licentious books. In a half morocco binding with paper covered boards. Externally, smart with some minor rubbing to the joints and to the extremities, harder to extremities. Printed information on the title to the verso of front endpaper, partially removed. Inscription to the recto of frontispiece leaf, stating that Grainville had translated this poem into French recently. Prior owner's ex libris stamp to title page, 'Ex Libris, J Visser, Rotterdam'. Faint, faded ink notations to title page with the Gregorian date of 1798 and also Ex Libris signature. Inscription to the 'Explication de La Gravure' page also. The translator's signature is to the same page. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with the odd spot throughout. Very Good Indeed
