Boston, Massachusetts: Marshall Jones, 1935. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good-/Without dust jacket. Signed by the author on the front end paper and inscribed to a previous owner. Saito was Japanese Ambassador to the United States. Saito, a thin and dapper man, died mysteriously of a 'chest ailment' in 1939. He was a well-liked diplomate, popular in Washington, and noted for his excellent English as well as a fine sense of humor. Once asked to explain his youthfulness he said, "Whiskey and soda, all afternoon, every afternoon." Octavo, 9 " tall, x + 231 pages, gilt spine titles on black cloth. A very good minus, generally clean, and sturdy hardcover first edition with moderate shelf wear, and exterior rubbing, light exterior soiling, but the front fore-edge shows a surface stain (coffee) not visible in the interior except at the edge margin of the title page; hinges and binding solid, paper clean and just lightly yellowed with slight foxing to fore-edges. Without dust jacket.
