Hardcover first edition copy, published 1964. Published by Gemini, Inc, printed in Japan. 9" X 12-1/2", dark red cloth covered boards with the title imprinted in gold on the spine and also on the front board in Japanese script, sewn binding. More than 230 works are detailed with full color photos. Includes an essay on the history of Japan by Marius Jansen, and also on the history of Japanese art by Nagatake Asano. A large oversized book weighing several pounds, beautifully printed. The book covers all periods of Japanese art, starting with the archaic period and continuing with a chapter devoted to each of the subsequent historical periods from the Asuka through the Muromachi, Momyama, Edo-Tokugawa and into the currrent Meiji periods. This copy is not a remainder, nor is it a library discard. There are no former ownership marks, no writing on the text. Unfortunately there is a stain on the lower fore edge of the text block. It appears on every page. The stain covers 6 inches of the 12 inches of the fore edge and 1 inch of the bottom edge. This is only a stain, the pages are not damaged, all pages are intact and turn with no problems. I'm not sure of the cause of the stain as there is no damage to the paper. Printing error? Sun fading? Who knows? The interior of the dust jacket has some age foxing spots too. No rips or tears to the dust jacket. An affordable reading copy of this classic work of scholarship on the history and culture of Japan!
