Philadelphia: Henry T. Coates, 1902. Hardcover. Two volumes [x, 377p.; vi, 374p.], illus., hardcover in dust jacket, in green fabric slipcase with title gilt on top edge. Illustrated profusely with b&w photographs and fold-out map at back of Volume 2. Volume 1 has small crack on the hinge of the front board with a clipped corner and small sticker on front free endpaper, else very good. Volume 2 in very good condition. In the first volume, Hartshorne focuses mainly on Tokyo and the surrounding area, with a brief history of the country. In the second volume, she turns her attention toward Japan's other major cities, temples, with a section on the Ainu. Hartshorne was born into a Quaker family and was a strong advocate for women's education, helping to found Tsuda University in Tokyo.
