New York: Henry T. Coates & Co, 1902. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. 2 vol. 8vo. [8], v-x, [1], 2-377, [3] pp.; [6], iii-vi, [1], 2-374, [2] pp. Bound in blue-green cloth with elaborate gilt decorations on the front boards, spines with lettering and decorations in gold; top edges gilt. Illustrated with a frontispiece and 24 plates with tissue guards in each volume (all photogravure), and a fold-out map in the rear of volume two. National Women's History Museum, "Anna Cope Hartshorne". Anna Cope Hartshorne lived in Japan for several decades, first teaching English at the Friends' School in Tokyo in 1897 and later serving as a teacher and administrator at Joshi Eigaku Juku (Women's Institute of English Studies) from 1900 until 1940. The present work was written to provide a detailed overview of Japan's people, customs, and culture as well as covering Japan's principal tourist destinations. A Near Fine set with a few hints of wear to the extremities and split to the front hinge of volume one (still sound and secure).
