New York: Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., 1890. Reprint Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. A very nice early two volume set of the incredible classic in the original paper backed red cloth jackets. In red cloth boards with white cloth spines and gilt design motifs, type and top page ends. Both volumes illustrated and with frontispiece. Volume 1 has previous owner's name and date ""Christmas 1892"" to top of ffep, otherwise clean interior. Dings to top corners with just a couple stray marks/spots to bottom edge of front board spine cloth and ffep. Jacket has some spots/smudges to front panel near spine, spine and rear panel near same. Minimal wear with some nicks/tiny chips to spine ends. overall about Near Fine in Very Good jacket. Volume 2 has some splashed streaks to front endpapers(mirror image) assumed from coffee/tea given color and previous owner's name and date as above to ffep. There is some splitting to center of hinge at front endpapers making front hinge just a little loose, and separation at hinge to page following. Also, a few stray carryover spots to front board, otherwise clean. Jacket has some smudges and spotting(to inside of front panel as well) with very light fraying at spine ends and a few nicks. Would be Near Fine if not for spotting and split to endpapers, as is Good in Very Good jacket. Slight tilt to spines of both volumes.

London: Osgood, McIlvaine & Co., 1894. First edition. Hardcover. Good +. 8vo, complete in 3 volumes. Original tan cloth boards with blue - green titles and decoration on front. Corners bumped and some minor edge wear. Some cracking of inner hinges, slightly cocked. Generally good + and nice & clean inside. This was published in lower numbers than the more common illustrated edition. Stated fourth edition inside, but this publisher (like others in Victorian Britain) often stamped later edition numbers on books to make it seem like the books were in high demand and selling out quickly. Wildly popular in Victorian times, the novel that introduced Svengali to the popular consciousness. Scarce.
