The whole of the West Country knew Jan Stewer who was, in the words of John Trewin, ?one of the most relishing dialect humorists the regions of Britain have ever produced.? Although ?Jan Stewer?s? Devonshire-dialect narratives appeared regularly in Exeter newspapers for 64 years, his creator was known far beyond the boundaries of the West Country between 1902 and 1938. He published seven books (all of them reprinted during the post-war years), and in 1936 he appeared in the leading role of his own play, Barnet?s Folly at the Haymarket Theatre, London.* A NEAR VG+ text copy of the 1st/1st with some minor faults in a VG dust jacket.*
