About This Item

London: John Lane the Bodley Head Ltd, 1941. Early Reprint. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Very Good/Very Good-. Augustus John, G. R. Morris. 8vo. Pp. 354. Frontis. subject portrait by Augustus John. Illustrated with eight full-page photomontages by G. R. Morris on coated paper. Red cloth, titles and rules stamped in pale yellow on the spine. Top edge dyed yellow. In the two color Morris photomontage illustrated dust jacket, 15s. price intact on the front flap. March 1941 reprint of the February 1941 first edition, as stated on the copyright page. Owner signature on front endpaper, notes on back endpaper, and a few marginal highlights all in light pencil. Laid in newspaper clipping reproduction of Joyce portrait by Jacques-Emile Blanche. Spine ends rubbed, corners lightly bumped, damp stains to boards, endpapers lightly age toned, head edge lightly foxed and dust soiled. Jacket edges rubbed, damp stains front and back, spine ends chipped and reinforced with aged cello tape. This sympathetic biography was written with the cooperation of the subject and completed in 1939. The first edition was under the press when Joyce died on January 13, 1941. The dust jacket montage is a triumph, juxtaposing an E. McKnight Kauffer aesthetic, including a disembodied hand, with varying typography. The result? Bordering on John Heartfield. Dust jacket is now preserved in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
