Very good full leather binding with bright gilt decoration to both boards and spine. Corners lightly bumped. Spine a little dulled. Top page edges gilt (other page edges deckled ). Watered silk endpapers. Photogravure portrait frontis of "Montrose". Title within ornamental border. Clean throughout. "This edition is limited to 320 copies for sale and 30 for presentation and review, of which this copy is No. 50". Colophon to verso of the title: "Printed At The Russell Press, 20 Great Russell Street, Bloomsbury". Contents include: Mr. Davenport's Note on the Binding; Portraits of Montrose; Concerning the Latin Editions; English Translations of Wisehart's Narrative; and Works of Reference; Biographic sketch, Montrose and Wishart; Part I., from contemporary "Haghe" (Hague) Translation of Wisehart's "De Rebus" (abridged); Part II., from the "Ruddiman" Translation, 1756 (abridged); Notes; Index. Excerpt from "Note On The Binding. By Cyril Davenport, F.S.A.": "...The binding which was chosen for the reproduction for this volume of Mr. Sime's on "The Great Montrose" is taken from one which, although it bears upon it stamps which were made for Henry Prince of wales, was, nevertheless, actually bound for Prince Charles. The binding chosen for reproduction for this volume covers a volume of Gil's "Logonomia Anglica", which was bound for Charles I. (It was presented to the British Museum by George II. in 1757). It is bound in olive morocco and tooled in gold, the boards being lined with crimson watered silk. The same on each side. In the centre is the princely coat-of-arms, on a ground closely powdered with small fleurs-de-lis. Along the edge is a broad double border, the inner fillet of which is made up of reversed cornucopiae, and the outer of a lace-like arrangement of fine arabesque ornamentation on a vandyked base..."
