About This Item
Copperplate engraving of the Great Wall of China. Engraved by Jakob Van Der Schley based on a map rendered by Jacques-Nicolas Bellin. 18th century. Measures 7.25 x 9.25 inches. Illustrations shows 2 separate segments of the great wall crossing Yongping, Lulong county and Longguan, Hebei respectively. Text in banner above top image reads "Plan de Long-men-hien" and above bottom image reads "Parlie de la Grande Muraille de la Chine." Rounded segment of the wall pictured with smaller square fortresses built behind it. Jakob van der Schley was a Dutch artist who engraved the frontispieces for Prevost's Histoire Generales Des Voyages published in the Hague in 1747. Bellin, the chief hydrographer for France, contributed several maps to the text based off of reports sent back by explorers whose accounts of Asia captured the European imagination. A strange blend of truth and mythology, mistranslation and exaggeration, these accounts and accompanying illustrations provide insight into the Age of Discovery's reach as well as its limitations. Slight toning to border does not affect image. Creased where folded. Light foxing does not affect image. Overall very good condition.
