A classic of suffrage literature presented by the National Woman's Party First edition, first printing, of this first-hand account of the militant women's suffrage movement in America, inscribed on the front free endpaper "Presented by the National Woman's Party Washington D.C. U.S.A. July 19th 1921", and initialled "SAh" (?) at foot. The National Woman's Party was founded in 1916 by Lucy Burns and Alice Paul to fight for an equal suffrage amendment to the US constitution, in a break with the broader suffrage movement, which had focused on legislative change at the state level. The party was linked to the suffragette movement in England and adopted many of the same militant tactics. Doris Stevens served on the executive committee of the party and was arrested several times for her activities. Jailed for Freedom, her first-hand account of the movement, was officially endorsed by the party and details the abuse by the press and police, beatings by mobs, and the forced feeding in jail the campaigners experienced. It was published in April 1920, prior to the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in August. With this achievement of their primary aim, the party remained active, advocating for other female causes, including the Equal Rights Amendment.
