Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1921. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Wilson, F. Vaux. First edition. Jacket edges very lightly rubbed. 1921 Hard Cover. 303 pp. Frontispiece by F. Vaux Wilson. Jacob Pratt, a middle-class Englishman, finds himself bankrupt because of his brother's failure to return some money Jacob has loaned him. AS a consequence, for several years he leads a miserably unhappy existence as a leather salesman. Suddenly the brother in America makes a fortune in oil, and Jacob finds himself one of the wealthy men of England and correspondingly famous. Having a keen sense of the responsibility his money brings and of his own past wretchedness, he decides to devote himself to helping the "under dog" and to outwitting the sharks who prey upon people of small means. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Edward Phillips Oppenheim (22 October 1866 – 3 February 1946) was an English novelist, in his lifetime a major and successful writer of genre fiction including thrillers.

Description:
New York: Little, Brown & Company, 1925. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 7x5x1. First edition. Lacks jacket, stain to rear board. 1925 Hard Cover. Miss Sadie Loyes, the manageress of the Hotel Weltmore Typewriting and Secretarial Bureau, set down the receiver of the telephone which had its place upon her desk and looked thoughtfully around at the eleven young ladies who comprised her present staff. She stood there, an angular, untidy-looking person, tapping a pencil against her teeth, unconscious arbitress, not only of the fate of two very interesting people, but also of the fate of a great nation. Portentous events depended upon her decision. A man's life in this teeming city of New York was a small enough matter of itself.

triangle books, 1934. hc only; signs of aging but clean copy and all pages intact; no dj; an excellent writer and to me comes across as a hybrid of a literateur and mystery writer and to me falls a little short of a great mystery writer but excellent nevertheless; a mystery writer i prefer using cold logic to spin the web after failing leaving personal drama outside the door; anyways i suppose thats why there are a million mystery writers
