London: Alfred A. Knopf, 1927. Slim quarto, pp (46), age-toned, cloth with paper title label on upper cover, the spine head slightly torn otherwise a good copy, in a slightly worn and frayed age-toned dustwrapper. Signed by Fothergill on the title page. [The content is slender - comprising pages arranged by colour, with a seasonal grid layout containing names of herbaceous plants and their heights. There is ample space for an owner to add their own records and selections. With a pencilled inscription on the front endpaper from Leslie Banks - possibly the 1930's actor ? ] [ John Fothergill, diarist and proprietor of the Spread Eagle in Thame in the 1920s and 30s, is probably one of the fore-runners of Basil Fawlty. Allmendingen, Switzerland: Published by the author, 2017. NEW. Very well illustrated, quarto, pp 312, black cloth, a very good copy in dustwrapper. LIMITED EDITION OF 250 COPIES ONLY. A heavy book - extra postage will probably be necessary. ["This is neither a book on how humans grow orchids nor a treatise of how they classsify plants, but an extraordinary look at the bond that unites men - botanists, gardeners, plant hunters, explorers - to the names of orchids and the histories behind their discovery and scientific apprehension. The work is a great step into the realm of history, and orchids are the perfect excuse to expose the efforts, the courage and bravery, the ambition and jealousies, and the indomitable will of those men in the flesh who have made it possible to discover and name the amazing diversity of plants. Each of the 36 chapters that compose the volume tell the story of an orchid (or a few orchids) and a man, beginning with Acanthephippium sylhetense and George King,…

Description:
Chatwin Books, 2021. First Edition. Trade Paperback. New. New! 'I know from my own experience that an evening spent tending my garden, after another incomprehensible day, brings a strength and calmness that no other activity can match. Is it the qualities associated with gardening, such as nurturing and the hard work of hands and heart, that are deficient in our culture? Much good writing has been done about the garden as a special place.' Madeleine Wilde's woodland garden on the south slope of Seattle's Queen Anne Hill was more than a "special place." It was her Sanctuary, her prism through which she explored the world and accomplished "much good writing." For two decades, starting in the early 1990s, Madeleine's "Notes from the Garden" delighted readers of the Queen Anne & Magnolia News in Seattle. Here, in luminous prose, is the best of her work from those years, ranging from hands-on advice for gardeners and would-be gardeners to poetically charged, often wry, insights into life in the tradition…

London: Barn Elms, 1996. Very well illustrated, large horizontal quarto, pp 135, a very good copy in dustwrapper. Very well illustrated, large horizontal quarto, pp 135, a very good copy in dustwrapper. [Landscape historian Batey explores real and fictional settings of Austen's novels. In each chapter she uses a different Austen novel to discuss the style of gardens and landscapes during the early 19th century and Regency England. A continuing theme is the tension between Georgian propriety and the challenging Romantic ideals as they played out in the English landscape. Jane Austen was deeply inspired by the landscape and rural comforts of southern England. Her family's final move to Chawton, in the depths of the Hampshire countryside and so near the Steventon rectory of her childhood, gave her great satisfaction and led to her most creative period. This comprehensive work provides a guide to the ideas and subtleties behind the real and fictional settings of Jane Austen's novels, with…
