New York: Neale Publishing Company, 1907. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 12mo, 61pp. A very good copy, rebound in 20th century red buckram with gilt spine title. Some soiling to a rear blank leaf, else a crisp, sound, clean copy. SIGNED on the title page by Stuart's grandson: "J. E. B. Stuart III 10-16-59, Harper's Ferry, W. V." This date represents the centennial of John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry, which was foiled by a group of U. S. Marines led by Robert E. Lee, whose ranks included several future Confederate (and some Union) military figures, most notably J. E. B. Stuart. This autograph was certainly obtained at a re-enactment done at Harper's Ferry on that date, which helped to kick off a six-year national commemmoration of the conflict's centennial. The monument memorialized in this volume stood for over a century at a prominent intersection in Richmond, and was taken down in 2020 as part of a national reckoning with the legacy of slavery and the Confederacy.
