The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) was founded in 1948 by Julian Huxley with the aim of encouraging international cooperation and providing scientific knowledge and tools to guide conservation action. Subsequent work in the 1960�s was devoted to the protection of species and the habitats necessary for their survival. In 1964 the IUCN established the "Red List of Threatened Species".
