Covers and spine are moderately bright and clean, lightest wear to extremities, tips are sharp and barely worn through on front cover, top edge gilt. Some foxing spots to free endpapers and paste-downs, as well as frontis illustration and tissue guard. An overall nice copy of the scarer London edition.. Dark green gold-embossed cloth. Top edge gilt (TEG), others trimmed neatly. xii, 270 pp. 52 bw & color plates. With twenty-six illustrations by Maxfield Parrish and twenty-six photographs, described as follows: 14 tissue-guarded full-page full-color plates by Parrish, 12 tissue-guarded full-page b/w plates by Parrish, 19 tissue-guarded b/w photoplates, 7 b/w drawings in the text. Includes chapters on Florentine, Sienese, Roman, Genoese, and Lombard villas, as well as villas of Venetia and villas near Rome.

Synopsis

Edith Wharton (1862–1937) was the first woman awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, an honorary Doctorate of Letters from Yale University, and full membership in the American Academy of Arts and Letters. John Dixon Hunt is a professor of landscape architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. Maxfield Parrish (1870–1966) was a renowned American painter and illustrator.
