About This Item

London: Printed for J. Power [...] and Longman, Hurst, Reese [et al.], 1822. Very good.. Beautifully bound late Georgian edition of Moore's famed lyrics, including "The Last Rose of Summer" - this copy with a contemporary leather presentation bookplate to one Mary Harle. IRISH MELODIES began when Moore's publishers asked him to create lyrics to traditional Irish tunes. The result was so successful that Moore's verses dominated Irish music, especially abroad, for generations. Byron, for example, famously told Moore that he knew the verses "by rote and by heart" (8 December 1813 letter, in his LIFE AND LETTERS, 197).

The IRISH MELODIES series was issued in ten volumes between 1808 and 1834; by the time of this edition, called third edition on the title page, eight had been issued. The most famous poem of the group, "The Last Rose of Summer," was first published with the fifth series and is included here.

An Irish classic in an appropriate and lovely full teal calf binding. 16mo, 6.5'' x 4''. Full contemporary teal goaskin elaborately stamped in blind and gilt rules and compartments to boards, raised bands, spine elaborately stamped in gilt. Marbled endpapers and edges. xii, 251, [1] pages. Some rubbing to edges and joints of boards. Firm and bright.
