Hardcover in Good Condition. No dust jacket.Quite a nice 123 year old volume. Illustrations within text include portraits, houses of authors, and examples of their handwriting. Green faille full cloth hardcover, bright and clear decorated gilt title panel on front with titles within; gilt rubbed off titles on spine, are still readable but not bright. Generally clean with light scuffing at places around extremities, rubbed down hinge, discoloration to rear upper corner; endpapers pale green with cream design; former owner signature and date, Oct. 29, 1897, on flyleaf; first few pages have damp stain along upper edge; inner hinge cracked pp 208/209; two closed tears to lower edge of page. Includes a chapter on The Colonial Period and on The End of the Nineteenth Century--and in betweenm chapters on American writers--B. Franklin, W. Irving, James Fenimore Cooper, Bryant, Halleck, Drake, Emerson, Hawthorne, Longfellow, Poe, and more. 7.5" x 5.25". 256 pp with A Brief Chronoplogy of American Literature and Index. 1896, American Book Company, New York, Cincinnati, Chicago.
