London : Tho Newcomb for Samuel Lowndes, 1684 A very good copy of the first and only edition of this rare and important work in new half calf binding. Robert Brady (1627-1700) was an academic and historical writer who rigorously researched original source material in an attempt to establish 'facts'. He was a Royalist and opposed to James Tyrell and William Petyt who took the Whig side. The book consists of three Tracts - each has its own title page - tracts 1 and 3 were previously published separately and this volume refers to them being 'very much inlarged' for this edition. The pagination is continuous through the Tracts. Also included is an Appendix 'containing several records, and a series of Great Councils and Parliaments before and after the Conquest, unto the end of the reign of Henry the third'; and a Glossary 'expounding many words used frequently in our antient records, laws and historians'. Some sections of the Appendix are in Latin. This copy has one of the 2 cancels noted by Cole and Contreras in their copy: it has 2 different versions of the Nn3 section. It does not have Qq4 in either version. The binding has raised bands and title label to the spine and marbled boards. New endpapers and initial and final blanks have been added. Page edges are reddened. Contents: title; epistle 6pp; title tract I 1683; advert 1p; intro 1p; text pp 1-162; title 1684; text 165-240 with numbers to pp 233-240 bracketed; title tract 2 1684; text pp235 - 326 with p 301/2 in 2 versions; title tract 3 1684; text pp 339 - 412; appendix pp 1-60; glossary pp 1-68; index (unpaginated) 15 pp with errata. There are some mispaginations with continuous text: pp 44-65-66 etc; 412-411-412; Glossary: 8-9-10-9-10. There is small loss to the side margin of p 89; a paper flaw hole which has been printed over so was present at printing at p 123; a repaired vertical tear to title of tract 3 and one further repaired tear; and a repaired hole (again present at printing) at p 10 of the Glossary. Contents in very good clean condition with the odd spot or mark. 2 armorial bookplates have been preserved from the rebinding and are loose in the book: ? jud Sharp, and T J LL Baker. A very nice copy.

Description:
London: Alexander Hogg, 1790 A good copy in recent quarter leather binding, with frontispiece, folding map of England and Wales, maps of Scotland and Ireland, and 103 further full page plates. Like many attempts to cover 'earliest history' to 'the present day', this is somewhat sketchy on the early sections, but increasingly detailed almost to a diary approach on 'the present day'. This is a later edition - undated - but the last entry is for June 10th 1790. The author simply added pages to update so although the text pagination runs to p714, the index section starts at p709 reflecting the smaller initial version. Known particularly for its lavish engravings - especially the later ones covering the American War of Independence. This copy has been recently rebound: the binding has a leather spine and title label and marbled boards and is in very good condition. New endpapers. Contents with frontispiece, title page, dedication, table, preface with decorative tailpiece, folding…

Description:
1684 English LAW 1ed Brady Old English History Politics Doomsday Book BritainRobert Brady was a 17th-century English royalist historian who played an important role in the emergence of English history out of its medieval forms. Much of this was from his book 'Introduction to the Old English History'. In this work, Brady covered aspects of English politics and government noting the influence of the famed 'Doomsday Book' – (citing taxation, land ownership, heraldic law, etc.).
This 1684 first edition proved to be an important advancement in English law.

Description:
London: printed by Thomas Newcomb for Samuel Lowndes, 1684. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of this extremely important compilation of legal and historical writings relating to English legal and political history from Anglo-Saxon times down to the Civil War. 12, 412, 60, 68, 15 pp. LEAVES Nn3 AND Qq4 ARE BOTH PRESENT IN TWO STATES (CANCELLANDUM AND CANCELLANS). This bibliographical quirk is entirely unrecorded: no source mentions any cancels in this volume. Each of the three tracts has a separate title-page, but the pagination is continuous. Printed mainly in Roman types, but with many words and phrases printed in black letter (Gothic) types. The appendix is taken entirely from the Domesday book, and is thus in Latin. The extensive glossary (68 pp) represents an important advance in English legal lexicography. Many terms in this glossary are given in Anglo-Saxon and Middle English. Folio. Beautifully bound in 19th-century half morocco and marbled boards. Binding somewhat worn at extremities, but…
