About This Item

Georg Olms Verlag, Hildesheim, 1974 reprint of 1931 first edition. Cloth, gilt cover-title, 8vo,. xix, 643 pp. A key bibliography for ornithology, and more generally vertebrate zoology, here in a good large-format reprint which greatly enhances the ease of reading the mass of detail provided in the notes. Arranged in three principal sections. There is a 146 page introduction, consisting of 19 chapters which furnishes a good account of the literature of Vertebrate Zoology from the writings of ancient and medieval zoologists, Aristotle, Pliny the Second, Dioscorides, Averroës, et al, to the more important treatises and monographs on ornithology, mammalogy, ichthyology, herpetology, and amphibiology of the early twentieth century. Included are general treatises and numerous periodicals and serials, monographs on vertebrate palaeontology, zoogeography, ecology, psychology, bionomics, experimental zoology, &c, likely to interest the advanced student and the librarian. Brief descriptions are also given of Natural History Societies, Museums, and Zoological Stations throughout the world ; travelogues of naturalists ; drawings of animal painters and illustrators, more than 5000 originals of which are in the McGill libraries. This is followed by a 30 pp classified index in both chronological and geographical order which gives the most important title by any one author, the rest being discovered by referring to the entries under the author in the main catalogue (pp 175-643). This third and largest section is a partially annotated Catalogue covering the vertebrate zoological items in all the McGill University libraries. Spine and part of rear board sunned, otherwise Very Good.
