About This Item
San Francisco: Chronicle, 1993. First edition. Hardcover. A nearly fine copy in pictorial cloth in a very good plus jacket with a little sun to spine. Dorothy Norman. Intimate is the right word for these photographs. These are private explorations made between 1930 and 1955, and never shown publicly until the 1990's. In this collection you'll find hushed interior and landscape views, plus many ethereal yet substantial portraits of some of the 20th century's artistic and political trailblazers. As Alfred Steiglitz's only direct protegee, Norman embodied the Masters's approach while remaining her own seer. The sculptural application of natural light, her pensive touch as a printer, and the scale of the prints themselves all contribute to a body of work that uncannily applies Stieglitz's own theories to practice. These beautifully reproduced photographs suggest not only their subjects' inner secrets, they also open small, deep windows into the heart of the artist who made them. 180 PAGES.
