Interpreting the Parables by Archibald M. Hunter - 1960

Parables are intriguing! The focus of Dr. Hunter's work is on the interpretation of the Parables of Jesus rather than on exposition. The Preface explains: "This book attempts to show the ordinary reader, in some hundred pages, how modern scholars understand the parables of Jesus. How much it owes to C. H. Dodd and J. Jeremias a glance at the Authors' Index will reveal. But I have not always agreed with them. The book also tries to do two things more: (1) to sketch the history of interpretation from apostolic times until today, and (2) to suggest how parables originally7 addressed to a specific historical situation in Palestine 1,900 years ago, can still speak to Christians in the twentieth century. Here I try to answer two questions that confront every preacher: (a) Is all allegorizing of the parables forbidden? (b) How far are we entitled to moralize them?"
