About This Item

Paris, Claude Chapplet, 1611

1 vol. (105 x 145 mm) of 1 f., [4], 189, [3] pp. and 1 f. Brown calf entirely strewn with fleurs-de-lys, three old-style gilt fillets framing the covers, gilt coat of arms in the center, gilt fillet running along the edges, all edges gilt with the great coat of arms of Louis XIII, King of France & Navarre: crowned coupled shields, accompanied by the crowned royal cipher "L", and surrounded by the collars of the king's orders.
Full tan morocco box.

Double royal provenance :

A copy bearing the royal coat of arms [Louis XIII], and and an exceptional handwritten dedication by the author, Pierre Coton, to Anne of Austria, Queen of France.

It also bears the handwritten bookplate of Henriette de France (1609-1669), daughter of Henri IV and heiress to Queen Anne.

It is dedicated by its author, Father Pierre Coton: a Jesuit, he had been Henri IV's preacher and confessor and the Dauphin's preceptor, before also becoming his confessor; for nearly fifteen years, he remained one of the most prominent figures in the reigns of Henri IV and Louis XIII.

The copy was probably given to Anne of Austria by Coton at the time of the royal wedding in 1615.

Called to the king's side first as a preacher, he was already famous both for his eloquence and for the gentleness with which he disputed in public jousts, almost always winning over his opponents to his cause; he had spent particular time in Nîmes and Avignon, strongholds of the Huguenots. He made an admirable impression at court, even on his worst enemies, and after his first preaching, Henri IV was quoted as saying that "he had done what no one had done before him, to have pleased everyone in a place where pleasing some is usually a reason to displease others".

Such dedications from the early seventeenth century are extremely rare; one featuring such important figures and a double royal provenance is, in every way, exceptional.

A few restorations to the headcaps and hinges.
