Chicago and London: The University of Chicago Press, 1986. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. Two volumes (complete), first printings, quarto size, 785 pp. The two volumes individually titled "The Torch of Mathematics, 1800-1870" and "The Now Mighty Theoretical Physics, 1870-1925".
Per the jacket flap: "Intellectual mastery of nature was the stated goal of German physicists of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, whose working lives, institutions, research, and scientific ideals are the subject of this panoramic contribution to the history of science."
___DESCRIPTION: Both volumes bound in full blue cloth over boards with light red lettering on the spines, orange endpapers, copious footnotes throughout; quarto size (9 3/4" by 7"), Vol. 1, 350 pp. and Vol. 2, 435 pp. Dust jackets with summary of the work on both flaps and publisher's ads on back panels.
___CONDITION: Volumes fine overall, with clean boards (other than a few very small, very light spots on the front board of Vol. 2), straight corners without rubbing, strong, square text blocks with solid hinges, the interiors clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings. The jackets also fine overall, clean, with a modicum of edgewear and light sunning to the spine of Vol. 2.
