1863 1st ed Field Artillery Civil War UNION Army Potomac Gun Howitzer Canons

A rare Artillery Manual, published and used during the Civil War. William F. Barry, Henry J. Hunt, and William H. French were the authors of this manual used by both sides throughout the Civil War. Hunt was chief of artillery in the Army of the Potomac, and Barry served on Sherman's staff in a similar capacity. Their ideas expressed in this book, together with their services during the war, were in a large measure responsible for the efficiency of the Union artillery.

This rare 1863 edition includes 88 illustrations throughout!

Richard Lander was an English explorer who made his name for his voyages into Africa. After nearly a decade of African voyages, the British government sent Richard and his brother John in 1830 to explore the Niger River. While at the river delta, they were captured by local tribes for a short time. Their voyage did yield grand results – they discovered the Niger River course and outlets.

Well kept example of this important book on organization and deployment of troops, horses and artillery including cannons, illustrated with the 79 called-for plates plus 8 plates of music for bugle signals that are not included in the table of contents. Brown textured cloth with darkened gilt spine lettering, decorative stamping in blind, 348 pages plus plates. Includes the engraved bookplate of John D. Vautier, Philadelphia, who served in the 88th Pennsylvania Volunteers and who wounded at Cold Harbor in 1864. Some minor fraying to spine ends, good hinges, firm text block, clean pages with some minor uniform age-toning to plates, small coffee colored stain near the bottom of about a half dozen pages near the front of the book, bookplate as noted, no other names or markings.. Hard Cover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
