Green cloth with gilt sp. lettering (Everyman's Library series binding), generally clean and unworn but spine faded and a rubbed at ends and back joint. Top edge dark-tinted. Illustrated end-papers. Decorated t.p. and facing page + xix + 261, 5 plates, 1 full spread col. ex-pagination, several un-numbered text figs; no obvious internal faults, undated but '1928' pencilled below series notice on p. ii. An essential classic for historians of Psychology and Victorian science, 1st pub. 1883 by Macmillan. This differs primarily in the omission of the chapters on 'Theocratic Intervention' and 'Objective Efficacy of Prayer' - the latter sceptical masterpiece of statistical satire was later re-issued by the Eugenics Society. 11 cm x 17.5 cm
