About This Item

Hamburg: Johann Naumanni & Geori Wolff, 1675. Quarto. 15.8 X 18.5 cm. Bound in 19th century half black cloth and blue paper boards. Old hand written label on front board and small maritime library stamp in center of board. Title page with a small rubber stamp from the same library. Single full page illustration which has the top half folded over. A slight old stain on the bottom left hand corner of a few text leaves. Last leaf a bit browned otherwise a fine clean copy of a very scarce title. Martin Frobisher made three voyages to the northeast coast of North America between 1576 and 1578 in search of gold and the North West Passage. This is the Latin version of the account of his second voyage by Settle, who sailed on it, and is based on the French translation of Settle's work published by Chuppin in 1578. "The notes of this edition contain much matter not in the English, French, German, or Latin edition" (Church). This edition is really the earliest edition that one can find that has the wonderful plate of Frobisher in the kayak with the atlatl in his hand. There is also a very early view of Frobisher Strait and a unicorn (narwhal) This copy from the Marinens Bibliothek Library in Kobenhavn 1675
