Cornwall, today a mecca for tourists and retired people,a canvas for painters, has a magnificent industrial past.It also has much to show for it,even though hardly any of the former industries except china clay (then 1972) still flourish. From 1760 onwards Cornwall was as industrialised as the Midlands and the North of England; for almost 200 years it was one of the most important metal-mining areas in the world and the setting for tremendous engineering enterprises. At the county's peak of industrial supremacy, from about 1830 to 1860; 600 steam engines were at work in the mining of tin, copper and china clay, while scores of foundries manufactured giant engines for mines the world over.Over forty ports catered for the fishing fleet and seaborne traffic, nine new ports being created for the new industrial age.
A richness of industrial remains, often in spectacular settings, meets the eye today. Here is an account of the remains and of the industries they represent: copper and tin mining, china clay winning, iron founding, quarrying, food processing etc; also of the canals, railways, roads and harbours that served them.
As in other books in this successful series,a gazetteer lists and describes sites of particular interest throughout the county. The book also includes maps and over thirty magnificent photographs.
