About This Item
Great Brak, South Africa: Howard Timmins, 1969 This is Hein Wicht's second book on palms. From the first page it is obvious that he has had a life long love for the palm family, and his affection and con cern are of great value in an age when progress is marked by the roar of bulldozers tearing up natural vegetation. The first law of urban develop ment in South Africa is to root up all indigenous plants and trees and re place them with exotics. Palm trees are usually some of the first to be re moved, particularly Hyphaene nata lensis and Phoenix reclinata which once abounded on the fast develop ing coast of Natal. At the present rate of destruction, it will only be in the National Parks and Game Reserves that man will be able to see palms in their true ecological setting. Apart from dealing with the botany and aesthetic value of our palms, Mr. Wicht gives fascinating information on the economic importance of the various species. This book is a valuable contribution to our knowledge of this interesting and roman ticplant. From the foreword by Ian Player, Chief Conservator Zululand Natal Parks, Game and Fish Preservation Board. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Foxing on illustrated inner boards - inked insription on flyleaf saying " Greetings for May 30 1970 from Dor" - 62 pages with black-and-white photographs and diagrams. ------------------ Orders over $100.00 are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
