Madrid: Por Don Antonio de Sancha, 1774 First edition of the general index to the works of Father Benito Jerónimo Feijoo Montenegro (1675-1764), called the Spanish Addison, and to the additional published works of Father Martin Sarmiento (1659-1772), the Benedictine scholar and private librarian who assisted Feijóo in the writing of his books. Feijóo, author of Teatro critico (1726-1739) and Cartas erudias (1742-1760), attacked the ignorance and superstition of his countrymen. Though the immediate response to Feijóo's work was outrage, his services to the cause of knowledge were ultimately honored in his lifetime. . Contemporary tree calf, gilt spine with red morocco label. . Small quarto. Woodcut title-page vignette. Former owner's small embossed stamp on title-page. Front free endpaper a little worn. Generally a near fine copy.

Our office is located in Los Angeles on West Third Street, between the Beverly Center and Farmer's Market. Though we gave up an open shop after more than thirty years, we welcome serious customers and dealers. We are normally open from 10 to 6 Monday through Saturday. Since some of our less expensive books are located in a temperature-controlled storage area offsite, you may want to call ahead of time to insure that the book you want to see will be available. We feature a stock strong in literature, history, Western philosophy, women's studies, education, history of science and fine printing and artists' books. We are members of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers. We have books from the 15th to the 20th century in all prices ranges.
