Philadelphia: Carey, Lea & Blanchard. Very Good-. 1835. First Edition. Hardcover. John T. Irving Jr. (1812-1906) was a Columbia educated New Yorker and author. In 1833 he joined a government trip under charge of Indian Commisioner Ellsworth to the Otoe Pawnee in present day Nebraska. According to Wagner, the book covers the story of the council at the Pawnee village, the signing of the peace, and incidentally tells the tale of the "human sacrifice" that would later become famous. Two volume complete set. Bound in half leather with marbled paper covered boards. Previous owner stamp on full title page of vol 2. Volume 1 lacks a title page, no signs of one being cut or torn out, appears it was printed without one. Title page in vol 2 has errata list on verso. Previous auction labels on front pastedowns of both volumes. Rear pastedown and endpaper have handwritting of previous owner in pencil, can be erased. Both volumes have heavy rubbing to side edges of covers with some loss of paper. Rubbing to top and bottom edges of covers. Corners rubbed. Ships same or next business day well protected in a box. ; 16mo 6" - 7" tall .

Original cloth and boards, printed paper spine labels (volume I label chipped, missing text supplied in facsimile). Spines sunned, some wear at extremities, else very good, internally clean. First British edition (and best edition, according to Howes), published the same year as the first American. Henry Ellsworth was commissioner in charge of this government expedition, undertaken with the purpose of signing a peace treaty with the Pawnee and Otoe tribes. Philadelphia: Carey, Lee and Blanchard, 1835. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Two volume set, pp 272, 296, in original cloth with gilt spine lettering. Boards moderately edgeworn, spines darkened at chipped at heads, some splitting along rear joint of Volume II, light scattered foxing, both volumes lacking rear free endpaper. Otherwise complete and sound. Wagner-Camp 55:1:"In 1833 John Irving and his uncle Washington Irving accompanied a government party under the charge of Commissioner Henry L. Ellsworth to the Otoe and Pawnee Villages. There they witnessed the signing of a peace treaty and one of the last occurrences of the Pawnee 'Morning Star Sacrifice.'" Field (764) notes that "the object of this expedition was of a higher humanitarian order than those which the government has usually organized for Indian affairs." Howes I-79; Rader 2026; Graff 2157.
