About This Item

London: G. Bubb, 1870. First Edition. Original cloth; very good plus. Dickens’s copy; presented to him only three weeks before his death, “To Charles Dickens, Esq. with the author’s compliments. London 16th May 1870.” With his bookplate, and the estate “Gadshill” label, dated June, 1870. Idle speculation leads to the hope that the reading of the dry content of this volume was not responsible for depriving the author of the time needed to complete The Mystery of Edwin Drood.
