Montgomery Martin's illustrated study of the Indian Empire, published shortly after the Indian Revolt. Collated, illustrated with engraved title page, frontispiece, fifteen engraved plates, and one double page hand coloured map.Volume I of author and civil servant Robert Montgomery Martin's illustrated history of the Indian Empire. A three volume work published between 1858 and 1861, and issued also in eight individual divisions, this volume contains the first eight divisions, and discusses the 'history, topography, population, government, finance, commerce, and staple products' of the Empire in India.With plates all bound in to the start of the work, as called for. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to back strip head and tail, with significant discolouration to back strip, and board perimeters. Light tide mark to tail of front board. Internally, binding slightly strained to centre of text block. Spotting to plate perimeters and engraved title page, with text leaves generally clean and bright. Very Good
