About This Item
Square 4to, cloth, short gilt title on front cover, illustrated with 20 very attractive woodcuts, and additional ad illustrations, 80 pp. plus 18 pages of ads. Some wear at edges, lower right hand corner bumped and torn a bit, some offset from illustrations, tear on frontispiece tissue guard, normal aging; otherwise very good. Simon "Sim" Kehow was a manufacturer of gymnastic equipment in the late 19th century. He learned about the value of Indian Club swinging when he was traveling abroad in the 1860s from British soldiers, and people in India. Through 20 excellent illustrations he shows how club swinging can build muscles and promote health. He even includes three illustrations showing the benefits of club swinging for women. Part of the charm of this book is the ads included in the last eighteen pages. In addition to an ad promoting his products, there are four pages of ads for baseball and cricket equipment. There are also a couple of pages with handsome illustrations or parlor games.
