London: Cassell & Company. Very Good- with No dust jacket as issued. 1883. First Edition. Hardcover. No signatures. A couple of 1" tears to the folding map. Some rubbing and dust stains to boards. Small 1/8" chip to cloth at tip of lower corner of front board. A little rubbing to cloth at ends of spine. Some foxing.; xii, 216 pages + [16] pages advertisements + folding frontispiece map ("India 1879"). Brown fine-ribbed cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine. Page dimensions: 218 x 141mm. The author toured India as a member of the Famine Commission, after the great famine in India in 1876-7. "In traversing the country with the Members of the Commission, men eminent in their respective provinces, and two of them native gentlemen holding high office under native Princes, an unusually favourable opportunity for observation of the Land the the People was afforded" - from the Preface. Folding map has the "Route of Famine Commission" printed in red. .
