About This Item
New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc., Publishers, 1979. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. This book's subtitle is: "The Movement, The Masters, The Precursors and the Followers," and Courthion, a 20th century Swiss writer and critic, delivers a readable art historical work, one meant for the general public, that is well illustrated with some 314 illustrations including 62 hand-tipped, full-color plates. First U.S. Edition, translated by John Shepley for the publisher's "Library of Great Art Movements." About 10 x 13 inches, 205 pages including a section on graphic works as well as notes, a chronology, a bibliography and an index. Bound in grey cloth-covered boards with title in gold on front cover and spine. Dustjacket's front panel shows Renoir's 1876 "Dancing at the Moulin de la Galette." The full-color frontispiece is Sisley's "Snow at Louveciennes." Boards and text are complete, clean and unmarked. No noticeable or significant damage or flaws. Not ex-library, not remaindered. The heavy-duty dustjacket with top and bottom fold-overs is in similar "very good" condition with perhaps a touch of edge and surface wear. This book is a good introduction on how Impressionism and the artists associated with it, fit into western Europeon art history.
