London: Methuen & Co., 1897. RARE, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR to his fellow survivor, Ralph Locke at the half-title page . -"Ralph Locke from Alan ? Boisragon, October 1st, 1897". Boisragon, Commandant of the Constabulary of the Niger Coast Protectorate Force, was one of only two survivors of the massacre, and Ralph Locke, District Commissioner of the Warri., was the other. With Locke's pencil annotations at the margins of several pages of the chapter "Our Escape" giving added details from his personal experience, making this copy likely the best copy imaginable. Bound in the original brick cloth, Very Good, the first signature detached, the cloth well rubbed. vii, 190, 40 (Publisher's catalogue) pages : map, portrait. Contents: History of Benin; The Royal Niger Company and H.B.M.'s Niger Coast Protectorate; Position of Benin; Our Expedition; Our Escape; The Punitive Expedition. "On January 4, 1897, a British party led by vice Consular general James Philip entered the Benin Kingdom. He was accompanied by six other British officials, two businessmen, translators, and 215 porters. His intention was to depose Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi. The Benin Monarch had resisted attempts to take over the Kingdom and so it had remained independent of British rule despite pressure to annex it with the British empire. When they entered through the north side of the Kingdom, they were ambushed by the guards of the king who had gotten foreknowledge of their plan. Unfortunately for them, their weapons were locked in their head packs. Philip and other members of his party were killed. At the end of the attack, only two Britons survived what was later known as the "Benin Massacre". ("The story of the Benin Bronzes and how they ended up in Germany" by Omotayo Yusuf , January 5, 2022,). Eight days later, the British punitive force arrived with 1,200 Royal Marines, who proceeded to set fire to the palace and famed wall, killing hundreds of people, removing the king, and putting an end to the independence of the Benin Kingdom while carrying out a large-scale looting of the Palace, shrines, and homes of chiefs of what was later known as the Benin bronzes. A truly dark event in the history of British colonialism in Africa. . SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY ARTIST. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Association Copy.

Description:
Oxford: Printed at the Theater, 1686 A good copy in full leather binding with map, 26 folding and 11 single page plates. With the Copy of the Proposals and list of subscribers, but lacking the Arms Omitted. The binding, with blind stamped lining to boards, raised bands and title label to spine, is in very good clean condition. The spine has been relaid, but the boards do not look contemporary so this could be a later binding which has itself been repaired. There is a little scuffing to the boards but little significant wear. New endpapers have been added, replacing damaged and heavily marbled ones (? late victorian). The contents have been trimmed at some time (it is now on the quarto/folio border), but all page edges are red and the trimming does not look recent. The trimming is particularly obvious in the subscribers list. Overall the contents are in good condition, with most text pages and many plates being bright and clean. However significant paper repair was carried out at one time using tape…

NY: Harper & Brothers, 1933. Signed first edition. Hard cover in original cloth. Published NY: Harper & Brothers, 1933, first printing. Presentation to American journalist and historian Mark Sullivan (1874 - 1952), author of the six volume "Our Times". "For Mark Sullivan from Thomas W. Lamont, June 1933." Mark Sullivan was a titan of twentieth century journalism. Born on a farm in Chester County, Pennsylvania, in 1874, he was only in his late teens when he bought an interest in a local newspaper, the Phoenixville Republican, for $300. The profits from this investment funded his education at Harvard, where he earned bachelor's and law degrees. In the first decade of the century he was a muckraker in the mold of Ida Tarbell and Lincoln Steffens. His 1904 exposé on patent medicine quacks for Ladies' Home Journal helped stoke the public outrage that resulted in the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act two years later. He was a close friend of Herbert Hoover and…

Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows
) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering." Which was informed by them, of course, and by all the rooms I'm in, and by imagining what is really required of all the caregivers I love. It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions…
