It would last over thirty years. The rule of the Manchu dynasty, weakened by the Boxer rebellion in 1900 and the passing of the Guangxu Emperor in 1908, was in its death throes. The new Emperor, Pu-Yi was only a boy and largely secluded in the Forbidden City. The string of military defeats begun in the Sino-Japanese war of 1894 had convinced military leaders that they should modernize. The process took some time but by 1910 China had an army of about 200,000 well trained and equipped troops with some 800,000 poorly armed militia. By 1910 the regular Chinese Imperial Army was wearing uniforms of largely European cut, although some vestiges of the old uniforms were in evidence. This is the army that Ruhl depicts in some detail in this booklet. Apart from uniforms, there are plates of badges, facing colors, headgear and accoutrements. Ironically a year later over a thousand years of Chinese Imperial rule would come to an end and it was the bulk of that Imperial army that would overthrow it.. Soft Cover. As New. Illus. by Ruhl, Moritz. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
